Under 17s storm to victory!

Mullingar Athletic 9

Killeigh 0

Mullingar Under 17 squad played some great football on Saturday last storming to victory over Offaly side Killeigh. The home-side started the game at a high tempo but Killeigh put up good resistance for the first ten minutes or so. The constant pressure from the Mullingar lads finally paid off when Conor Gavigan finished a Nathan Gavin cross to the net. Gavin was excellent on the right wing and gave the Killeigh defence a torrid time in the first half. Goal number two came from Darragh Daly from outside the box.

The second half was all one way traffic for the home side. The introduction of Mikey Brown, Chris Loran, Brendan O’ Donnell and Jamie Walsh added to Killeigh’s woes, with Brown getting a hatrick, Loran scoring twice and O’Donnell also on target. Goal number nine came from the capt Daly to round off a fine win.

Credit must go to Killeigh for a good clean game and for showing great sportsmanship and attitude in what was a very one sided game and we wish them well in their future fixtures. Mullingar had great displays from Max Charles on the left wing, Eoghan O’Malley, Shane Donoghue, Val Sizychas in defence, Eoin Clarke, Luke Gallagher, Darragh Daly and Sean Cullen, while Ben McCabe had a comfortable afternoon in goal. Well done to all!

Athletic’s under 17s overcome inclement weather!

Mullingar Athletic 4

Portumna 2

Mullingar were away to Portumna at the weekend and had a tough battle against the hosts. The pitch was in a wet and muddy condition and it made it hard to play football for both teams. Mullingar lost Brendan o Donnell early in the game to a back injury and he was replaced by Sean Cullen. Athletic piled early pressure on Portumna and won a free kick 15 minutes into the game, just outside the area, which Jamie Walsh floated over the Portumna wall into the net.

However Portumna were soon on level terms after a free kick from the left fell to one of their players and he slotted home. Players on both sides were finding the conditions difficult as free kicks mounted up.

Darragh Daly scored from a free forty yards out midway through the half as he and Eoin Clark took control in midfield, before another Portumna free kick found its way to the net -more down to the slippy conditions than any errors in the Mullingar defence.

Sean Cullen and a very impressive Conor Gavigan were causing Portumna a lot of problems up front and Gavigan got his reward before half time when he netted for Mullingar. The second half was played at a hard and fast rate but the Mullingar defence were on top at this stage with Luke Gallagher, Val Sizychas and a great performance from Eoghan O Malley at centre half. Portumna’s threat waned towards the end and the result was secured 15 minutes from time when a cross from the right just escaped Conor Gavigan and was met by Jamie Bolger who helped it home.

It was a well earned 3 pts and Mullingar showed they have the ability to dig deep when they need to. Ben McCabe had a difficult job in goal but coped well and couldn’t be faulted for the Portumna goals.

Condolences

All at Mullingar Athletic wishes to express its deepest sympathy with a number of families that have been bereaved in recent days.

It was with great sadness when the club heard the news of the passing of Tony Donohue on Monday afternoon. Tony was a well known figure in Athletic where his son Diarmuid and grandsons Eoin, Shane, Luke and Cormac all have, or still, don the Athletic jersey. Diarmuid is one of the original Athletic players and he continues to support the club in many ways- not least cheering on his sons from the side- line. Diarmuid’s brother Ciaran is also well known to all at Athletic as he cheers on his sons’ teams on a weekly basis. To Tony’s wife Mary, sons Diarmuid, Ciaran and Feargal and daughter Sinead we extend our heart felt sympathy on the passing of Tony- one of life’s truest gentlemen.

We in Mullingar Athletic also extend our sympathy to the family of Geraldine Martin whose untimely death also brings great sadness to all who knew her. Geraldine’s sons Paul and David both represented Mullingar Athletic at various levels through the years. We offer our deepest sympathy to Joe, David, Paul, Alan and extended family on Geraldine’s sad passing.

Our deepest sympathy is also extended to the Lynn family on the passing of Padraic ‘Poggy’ Lynn, Ballyote. All those involved in sport knew Padraic and we extend sympathy to his wife Olive, parents, brothers and sisters and extended family and friends.

May all their souls rest in peace.

Can we remind all parents/players/managers to return all raffle tickets as soon as possible as the raffle will take place on Monday December 19th. Tickets may be returned to the clubhouse or to team managers and coaches. Many thanks to all those who supported the raffle.

Athletic’s under 17s work hard to get result!

Mullingar Athletic 2

Portlaoise 1

After a hard fought battle Mullingar managed to come out on top in a game in which they didn’t play as well as in previous matches. Despite having plenty of goal chances it was mid-way through the first half when the opening goal was scored by Darragh Daly who lobbed a ball over the Portlaoise keeper. Daly’s shot looked to be going over the crossbar but the ball dropped nicely into the net to put Athletic in front. Nathan Gavin came into the midfield after Jamie Bolger picked up an injury and he put in a solid performance alongside Daly.

The second half saw better football from Mullingar as they stood up to the Portlaoise lads. After a fine cross from Val Sizychas into the path of Sean Cullen the latter chipped the oncoming Portlaoise keeper to put Athletic two up, leaving the visitors with a lot to do to establish themselves on the game. Pressure was put on Mullingar and after a foul by Max Charles the resulting free kick ended up in the Mullingar net. The athletic defenders Eoghan O’ Malley, Shane Donoghue and Val Sizychas were solid at the back and their performance, along with Luke Gallagher in the centre, was instrumental in maintaining the lead to secure full points from the tie.

Under 16s make headlines

Our under 16 premier team made the headlines in the Evening Herald on Monday last for all the right reasons. Despite losing their game to Swords Celtic on a scoreline of 2-1 Ger Brady, Sports Journalist with the Herald, recorded the Swords manager Ray Burch applauding the Mullingar team (managed by Kevin Moore) for the support they gave when a Swords Celtic player broke his leg in the 2nd minute of the fixture following a ‘freak’ accident. Ray Burch is quoted by Brady , ‘The Mullingar line, players and parents were excellent and very concerned for Jason (injured player)’. As a gesture of goodwill to the injured player both teams agreed to award him an honorary ‘Topflight Player of the Week’ award.

Hat – trick Brown seals victory!

Mullingar Athletic 4 Newbridge 1

Newbridge started this game strongly and gave Mullingar lots to do in the early stages of this match. The defence once again, as in other weeks, stood firm with Luke Gallagher and Eoghan O Malley cutting out the early direct approach of Newbridge. When Mullingar put their first attack together Mikey Brown slotted the ball home after a neat pass from Sean Cullen.

Brown was a constant threat and netted a second after a spell of pressure on Newbridge. It wasn’t all one way traffic though and Newbridge got a goal back just on half time when the ball should have been cleared. The introduction of Brendan O’ Donnell in the second half made a huge difference and his pace along with Cullen and Brown up front created the third goal – a thirty yard belter from Mikey Brown, giving him a hat-trick. Brendan O Donnell got the fourth when the Newbridge defence failed to clear their lines.

Mullingar were well served by Darren Hughes, Val Sizychas, Eoghan O’Malley, Shane Donoghue, Luke Gallagher, Max Charles, Jamie Bolger, Eoin Clarke, Darragh Daly, Sean Cullen, Mikey Brown and Brendan O’ Donnell

Under 17s continue winning streak!

Mullingar Athletic 4 Portlaoise 0

The winning streak for the under 17s continued on Saturday with a gutsy performance from the Mullingar boys against a very good Portlaoise side. An under strength Mullingar scored early in the first half when Luke Gallagher’s goal bound shot was deflected away from the Portlaoise keeper and into the back of the net. The team settled well after this with Darragh Daly and Eoin Clarke running the show in midfield, giving a good supply of ball to the front pair Sean Cullen and Conor Gavigan. Both of these lads were a constant threat and their physical presence caused Portlaoise a lot of problems with Cullen scoring twice - a goal in either half. In the second half Darragh Daly met a corner kick with a powerful header to put the game to bed.

This was a great team effort nonetheless and the guys at the back were tremendous -Valle Sizychas, Jamie Walsh and the rock solid Eoghan O'Malley keeping Portlaoise at bay whenever they threatened. Ben McCabe in the Mullingar goal cleaned up any loose ball and brought off one brilliant save on a goal bound shot. The wingers Max Charles on the left and Jamie Bolger on the right both played exceptionally well - they gave Mullingar plenty of options going forward and the football was great to watch. If the team can produce performances like this consistently Mullingar can be a match for anyone.

Athletic’s Under 16s begin season with shock defeat of leading team!

Mullingar Athletic U-16 opened their NDSL Premiership league campaign on Sunday last away to Premier leaders Woodlawn, a team who had earned three out of three opening league games wins prior to this meeting. Stepping out for their first league game, Athletic fully understood a competitive fixture was before them. They approached the game undaunted and, with their undoubted skills base, produced a game with a level of commitment that earned them a most deserved win.

A brace of goals from Ciarán Shanley in the second half before the opposition late on peeled one back was a reflection of Ciarán’s contribution behind whom stood a team from goalkeeper to forwards who had a work ethic that never waned from the first whistle.

Woodlawn are not premier leaders without good reason, being a disciplined and organised outfit, and with a strong win behind them in the first half were able to put significant pressure on a resilient Athletic back line throughout the half. Two outstanding saves by Athletic’s keeper Anthony Brady, a great reflex save from a shot from eight yards out and a diving save from a strong shot low into the bottom right of the goals, kept this game all square at half time. This, however, was countered by three clear cut opportunities for Mullingar prior to half time, by some great positional play from Ben Thompson and Ciarán Shanley, well supported by Shane Kenny on the right side of the park.

With the game all square at the start of the second half, Mullingar took some advantage of the elements to achieve more territorial advantage. But it would be misleading to determine this game was won by fortuitous weather conditions as the central midfield work rate from Darren Keena and Sam Plant, ably supported by Naosán Moore and the continuous battling work rate of Thomas Fitzgerald on the left side of the park, started to produce some penetrating balls from the wings and through the centre. This paid off within the opening fifteen minutes of the half with a great opener from Ciarán after a ball played through by Thomas on the left side of the box, saw him slot the ball home on the goalkeeper’s near side. Within five minutes Mullingar had doubled their lead by a ball slotted through by Naosán to Ben on the edge of the box, who shot on sight, to be saved but spilled by the keeper and stuck in on the rebound by Ciarán.

Woodlawn dug in and produced a well-worked goal ten minutes from time to create an intense last period of the match. Credit where credit is due, Athletic’s centre backs Peter Fagan and Jordan Stead stood firm and, with the indomitable Ian Martin in right back, produced some solid tackling and wise decision-making in positional play to keep the opposition at bay. When changes needed to be made, Mark Kelly came in to the defence and Kieran Feeney came on to the right wing to give an edge to the team and to strengthen the resolve when it was needed most.

Ending on 2-1, this was an excellent performance for Mullingar Athletic’s first premiership game of the season and allows them to look forward to the season ahead.

Athletic begins season in style!

KILLAVILLA 0
MULLINGAR ATHLETIC 4

Mullingar Athletic have started the new season in style with a comprehensive win away at Killavilla.

Athletic dominated the early stages of the match and made the breakthrough in the 9th minute. Enda Matthews played in Johnny Gavin with a brilliant through ball and Johnny slotted the ball past the keeper. However it was not until the 55th minute when Athletic increased their lead. Kevin Keegan spotted some space in behind the defence before playing another lovely through ball into Johnny Gavin's path. Johnny netted his and Athletic’s second of the game.

Darragh Kiernan was posing a continuous threat down the left side, and it was his run and cross that lead to Athletics third goal in the 65th minute. Darragh's cross was handled in the box by a Killavilla defender, resulting in a penalty. Kevin Keegan stepped up to slot home the spot kick. Both teams exchanged some chances before Athletics' keeper Stephen Watters ensured Athletics lead stayed at three nil when he made a quality save, turning a Killavilla free kick over the bar. Athletic continued to play some good quality football and rounded off a great display with another goal in the 75th min. Last year’s player of the season, Kevin ‘Hagi’ Keegan went on a fine individual run going past a couple of Killavilla defenders before netting his second of the game.

Team: S.Watters, P. Radford, M.Brady, A. O Reilly, M.Syron, D.Masterson, E.Matthews, K.Keegan, D. Kiernan, J.Gavin, M.Fadian Subs used: K.Dunleavy for A. O Reilly, D.Noonan for K.Keegan, S.Kavanagh for J. Gavin

This was a fine way to start the season and everyone is looking forward to seeing the lads in action on Wednesday evening in Gainstown against Clara Town. Kick off time 7.30pm.

Fantastic Milestone for Club and Conor Smith:

Former Mullingar Athletic AFC and current Waterford FC youth player Conor Smith received a call up to the Irish U-19 International team for the Finals of the European Championships that is currently taking place in Romania. Although Conor has now represented Ireland at Under 16 and 17 level this is his first time to play in the final stages of a major championships alongside many the brightest young stars of today’s football world. Conor featured as a substitute in the opening win against Greece and started the second game up as a lone striker against the Check Republic playing for 75ming before tiring. Unfortunately for Ireland they lost this game by 2-1 having been leading 1-0 until 70th minute only to get hit for two goals in sixty seconds by the Check side. Conor’s side face a daunting task in their last group stage game against the host team Romania at 6pm tomorrow evening 26th July. These games are been featured on Eurosport TV or track the teams and Conor’s progress on the official www.UEFA.com website.

This is a very proud moment for our club, for Conor and for his family and we congratulate him on his endeavour and achievements.

Awards Galore for Athletic!

The Combined Counties Football league Awards Night was held on Saturday last in the Bridge House, Tullamore. A large contingent of Mullingar Athletic players, coaches and committee members travelled to the venue as both our Senior ladies and men teams were due to collect their medals, following victories in the Senior Ladies and Men’s Counties Cup competitions and the Michael Dolan Cup. Representatives from the management team of our Youths also travelled to receive their first medals, having topped the Division 1 Evening Herald Youths League this season.

Having been presented with the various team medals there was more joy for Athletic when it was announced that Kevin ‘Hagi’ Keegan was named as the recipient of the CCFL Player Merit Award for his outstanding contribution on the playing field over a number of years and his commitment and dedication to the club. His performance in this year’s Counties Cup Final was most noteworthy - particularly when we remember Kevin played whilst carrying an injury. This award, presented by jimmy Kelly, CCFL Chairman and Paddy McCaul, President FAI, was more than deserved by one of most popular and longstanding players we have in Athletic. Well done to you Hagi from all at Mullingar Athletic on this great achievement.

Club of the Year!

The awards night continued to be one of great celebration when the accolade of Club of the Year was awarded to Mullingar Athletic by Paddy McCaul and Jimmy Kelly. The award was made to Athletic ‘…following on from their historic win in the Counties Cup and for their all round organisation, efficiency and success as a club this season…’

This award was really the icing on the cake for all at Mullingar Athletic and each and every player, coach, manager, ground staff and committee members should feel proud of their input into the club thus gaining such significant recognition from an objective audience.

Following a well deserved victory against Melville Utd on Saturday last Gerry Hynes squad travels to Mountmellick on Sunday where kick off will be 3-30pm. We encourage all our managers, coaches and support to travel on Sunday to support our senior squad in this very high profile cup final.

ATHLETIC 10’S RULE AT THE ATHBOY SUPER 7’S

An under 10 selection travelled at the gracious invitation of Athboy Celtic to their annual Super 7’s tournament last weekend. The boys and their management team were graciously welcomed by their hosts, and wore their Athletic colours with great pride over the two days of the tournament.

Day 1 started on Saturday morning with a kick off in incessant rain against the tournament favourites (and eventual winners), the pick of Trim Celtic’s under 10’s. In a fantastic flowing game of football, Athletic came from behind twice, with goals from Mark McNamee and Dean Rooney, to earn a share of the spoils It was huge panel effort, with all 10 players contributing to this great start, but none more than Luke Smith in goals, who pulled off a series of great saves to earn us a point.

A half hour after the Trim game, we were back out again, this time against Enfield Celtic. The rain was still bucketing down, and the exertions of our first match seemed to catch up on us, as we succumbed to a breakaway goal and an own goal to go down 2 to 0. Despite the best efforts of captain James Drumm, Dillon Matthews and Keelin Byrne, we couldn’t break down the Enfield defence.

An hour later, it was match on again, as we took on host club Athboy Celtic. In terrible conditions both teams went at each other to get the win that would take them into the Cup competition. We were under pressure from the off, and it took Luke’s best, and sterling work from John Boyne to keep Athboy at bay. Just minutes after half time we gave away cheap possession in midfield and were punished with a smart finish from an Athboy striker. We went on the offensive straight away, but despite the best efforts of Shane McLoughlin, Adam Shaw and Eoghan Ahearne we had to wait until 10 seconds to go to get the equalizer we deserved. The Athboy keeper kicked the ball out into midfield, and could only look on bemused as the ball came flying back past him from a fabulous Ahearne strike. This ensured a third place finish and put us into Sunday’s Shield semi-final. Better conditions awaited us for our 3pm kick-off against Summerhill on Sunday. The sunshine brought out the best in our boys, and with John and James lording the midfield, our front three of Adam, Shane and Deano tormented the opposition. We went on to score goals from Mark, Shane, James and a spectacular lob from Deano to put us into the Shield final against Navan Celtic.

The final was a real cat and mouse affair, with both defences on top. Dillon, Keelin, and James were rock solid, and only once were we threatened, but the ever reliable Luke made sure Navan were kept at bay. The game finished 0-0, and it was on to penalties. Athletic went first and Mark hit the back of the net, as did Navan. John Boyne drilled in no.2 , as did Navan. Eoghan made it 3 out of 3 for Athletic, and then Luke piled the pressure on Navan with a great stop from penalty no. 3. Shane then placed his penalty into the corner, which meant that if Luke saved Navan’s penalty, Athletic were Shield champions. With his teammates lined up on the half way line, Luke threw himself to the right and pushed away the penalty. There then followed a stampede as teammates, and supporters rushed on to acclaim the hero.

Captain James Drumm was presented with the Shield and the team their trophies, to great acclaim from all present.

Many thanks to all families who gave up their weekend to travel to Athboy to support these dedicated Mullingar Athletic under 10’s, and to the host club for their invitation and organisation.

Condolences

All at Mullingar Athletic sends its condolences to Johnny Gavin on the death of his grandfather.

The Spirit of Mullingar – Charity Festival

12th – 15th May 2011, A Legendary Game!

Following months of preparation the Liverpool Legends arrived in Gainstown on Saturday last to play a Mullingar Athletic squad, as part of the Spirit of Mullingar Festival. The large turnout of spectators were treated to a most entertaining and competitive game which saw world renowned players such as John Aldridge, Clayton Blackmore and Ricky Villa take to an immaculately prepared pitch. At a pre-match reception in the clubhouse Ricky Villa was recalling his famous winning goal in the 1981 Cup Final against Manchester City when he – having already scored the opener, took off on that famous mazy run with the score at 2-2, past four City defenders and slotted home under Joe Corrigan for the winner.

Played in a very family friendly atmosphere young and not so young fans enjoyed speaking to their heroes and all of the Legends are to be complimented on their patience when signing numerous autographs and posing for much appreciated photos.

The Mullingar Athletic team is to be highly complimented for their competitive game in which they led the Legends for the most part only to be defeated by a single goal in the end. Each of the squad, under the leadership of Gerry Hynes, had engaged in significant fundraising to secure their place on the squad and as mentioned over the past weeks all funds raised will be equally shared between two local charities, Irish Autism Action and T.E.A.M.

Following the game - in what was a poignant moment - Ann and Andrew Lynch presented the Darragh Lynch Memorial Trophy to John Aldridge. Ann and Andrew’s son Darragh, who sadly passed away earlier this year, had been a lifelong Liverpool supporter and it was a fitting tribute to him for a life well and truly lived. Darragh’s beloved brother Robbie played his own part in proceedings when he took on custodian of the Liverpool Legends net for a spell in the second half.

All club members are to be sincerely thanked for their voluntary work both in preparing for the event and on the day itself. A large number of players, coaches, parents, committee members, ground staff and supporters worked tirelessly on the day and indeed the months prior to what will be a legend in the club’s history. Sincere thanks to all involved.

Good wishes

We would like to send our good wishes to all our members who will be celebrating their First Holy Communion in the coming weeks.

Condolences

All at Mullingar Athletic wish to extend its deepest sympathy to Willie Geraghty on the recent death of his mother Mrs. Betty Geraghty –Doyle. Willie has been associated with Mullingar Athletic since its foundation and has served the club loyally as coach/manager and committee member. We extend our sympathy to Willie, Declan, Ann, Bernadette and Catherine and to all the extended family on their sad loss.

May her soul rest in peace.

Good wishes

Well done to John O’Dea and his squad who secured the Michael Dolan Cup on Saturday last. In what was described by Gearoid Keegan, Evening Herald journalist, one of the most memorable CCFL finals, Paddy Dowdall’s 79th strike decided the contest. Both the excellent Athletic- Noel Croash- and Shinrone goalkeepers ensured the match to be scoreless until late in the second half when Dowdall’s strike secured title honours for the club.

We also wish a number of our underage teams all the best in the next few days as they contend for league and cup honours.

We would like to send our good wishes to all our members who will be confirmed and celebrating their First Holy Communion in the coming weeks.

FAI High Performance Director Wim Koevermans

Visits Mullingar Athletic AFC

Last week seen Dutch Man and FAI High Performance Director Wim Koevermans visit Mullingar Athletic AFC club grounds in Gainstown. The reasons for this high level visit from FAI headquarters was to show support for the extensive coaching systems and education that have been implemented at Mullingar Athletic AFC under the direction of the clubs ‘Head of Coaching and Player Development’ Mr. Leo Devlin.

It is not understatement to say that Koevermans was seriously impressed with the level of facilities available at the club. A total of 56 coaches turned up on the night where Mr. Koevermans demonstrated his skills as a coach by putting on a one and a half hour coaching session with the clubs under eleven development squad. The session took place on the clubs new floodlight 3G All-weather surface and the session involved a lot of demonstration and interaction between Mr. Koevermans and the 56 coaches in attendance.

Following the outdoor coaching session the coaches retreated to the clubhouse for tea and refreshments. This short break was followed by an hour of question and feedback between Mr. Koevermans and also FAI Coaching development officer Mr. Padraig Nicholson who assisted with coaching duties on the night. It is a testament to Mr. Koevermans personality that he fitted in seamlessly to this environment and related very simply to the questions and offered very good but simple advise to the coaches in attendance.

Wim Koevermans was playing for the Dutch Olympic team against Italy when the famous Rinus Michels who had masterminded Holland’s 1988 Euro triumph, spotted him and added him to the Euro 88 squad. “I knew quite early in my career that I wanted to stay in football as a coach or manager,” he explained. “At 19 I already had an A licence, but I couldn’t do anything with it unless I had a playing career.”

He enjoyed over ten years in the top Dutch League with Fortuna Sittard and FC Groningen, mostly as a centre-back, but injuries to his lower back and hips forced an early retirement at 30. He studied Michels and his methods intensely and honed his coaching skills. He became manager to Dutch U21 team where he was responsible for bringing through players like Van Persie, De Jong, Robben, Sneijder, Boulahrouz and Landzaat and is well qualified for his present role as FAI High Performance Director.

His primary role is to work with the underage international team players and take them through a development phase that will see them equipped to play at full international level against the best international sides in Europe and around the World. Watching him closely in Gainstown last week there is little doubt that he has the personal and coaching skills to succeed at what is a very difficult area in player development.

Unfortunatley the much awaited visit of the FAI National Performance Director Wim Koevermans scheduled for 6pm on Thursday last had to be postponed due to the adverse weather conditions.

The visit will be re-scheduled for sometime in the early new year.

Packie Bonner:

All club members were very sad to hear the news coming from FAI Headquaters in Abbottstown last week that the very popular National Technical Director Packie Bonner was to leave the Association. Packie had been with the Association for the last eight years and has been Technical Director for the past six. Packie was a good friend of the club and made many visits over recent years. The FAI are not immune to what has been happening in the Irish economy and Packie became one of many who were released by the FAI in the last few weeks.

All the members of Mullingar Athletic AFC would like to thank Packie for his support over the years and we wish him well with his future.

Congratulations

Pride of place this week goes to Oliver Holmes – better known as Ollie to all who enter the gates of Mullingar Athletic. On Friday night last Ollie was honoured by the Combined Counties Football League at their annual awards ceremony in Tullamore. To his surprise Ollie was given the award of CCFL Contribution to Football Award – an award well and truly deserved. A number of Mullingar Athletic members were there on the night to witness Ollie’s great achievement in receiving such a major award.

The citation was read by Jimmy Kelly, CCFL Chairman. Jimmy highlighted Ollie’s fifty year involvement in Association Football, as a player, referee and Honorary Life Member of Mullingar Athletic AFC. Jimmy noted that Ollie is always at the door of Mullingar Athletic to extend a welcome to both young and old. He is there every evening to act as administrator for the All Weather pitches and spends every Saturday assisting with the organization of the coaching programme and the running of an extensive games schedule. Ollie can also be seen as a supporter for almost all Senior games. Indeed to fully cover Ollie’s role in the club would take many pages to fill.

Well done Ollie - enjoy your award!

All at Mullingar Athletic wishes to convey their sympathy with the following families:

To Christy Lynch and family on the death of his mother, Mrs. Theresa Lynch, Raharney.

Conor Smith to don the Irish jersey!

Conor Smith—who until recently was a member of our under sixteen panel but has just signed for Watford—continues his great journey when it was announced this week that he has been selected for Ireland’s under 17 squad, managed by Sean McCaffrey. Conor is one of twenty two players who will take on Hungary in a double header friendly next week. The games take place on Tuesday, February 9th in Tolka Park (Kick off 7.30pm) and Thursday, February 11th in Carlisle Grounds (Kick off 7.30pm). The games act as important preparation for the elite phase of the Under 17 UEFA Championship which takes place in Greece from May 19-24.

The manager intends to use these pair of matches to prepare his squad for the task ahead in the qualifiers as well as integrate some new faces into the set-up.

"It's important that we maximise the value from these two games against Hungary as they're our last preparatory matches before the qualifiers in six weeks time," said McCaffrey: "There is a determination within this group of players to succeed in reaching the European Championship finals this summer and that sort of resilience was vital in the first phase when we won our first two games through late goals.”

He added, "I stated at the start of the season that all players would be considered throughout this campaign and I've brought in some new lads to have a look at. The opportunity is there for them to prove that they're worthy of a place in the panel for the next matches."

Conor is one of seven remaining finalists fighting for a professional contract with Inter Milan in the Sky One show, Football’s Next Star. His strong performances at the club’s Interello training camp have consistently impressed the coaches on the reality show.

Conor is delighted to be included in Sean McCaffrey’s squad. He said, “It is a dream of all footballers to represent their country and I am no different. I’m looking forward to meeting up with the rest of the lads and hopefully I will get the opportunity to pull on the green shirt.”

The Irish booked their place in the elite phase by finishing top of their first section group in October, courtesy of victories over Bulgaria and Latvia coupled with a scoreless draw in the last match against fellow qualifiers Sweden. McCaffrey' side are scheduled to meet Finland, Austria and host nation Greece in the mini-group with the aim of clinching top spot and the one available qualifying place into the European Championships in Liechtenstein in May.

Condolences

All at Mullingar Athletic wish to express their sincerest sympathy to the family of Mr. Phil Smyth, Ardmore Road who – at the great age of 94 – passed away on Saturday morning last. Phil’s two sons, Kevin and Willie have been involved with Mullingar Athletic since its formation, as players and coaches. Phil’s four grandsons Robert, Eoin, Darren and Alan and granddaughter Emma have all represented the club at underage level. Mr. Smyth was himself a renowned athlete, hurler and footballer. To his wife Catherine, sons Willie and Kevin, daughters Patricia, Mary and Catriona, his grandchildren and extended family we offer our sincere condolences. May his soul rest in peace.

Congratulations

Well done to our Senior Team who travelled to Wexford on Sunday morning last and came home victorious in the 3rd round of the Leinster Junior Cup, defeating Shamrock Rovers on a scoreline of 1 - 3.
